Trivia: Norman Shaw built the original cottage on the grounds of this old hospital in 1884 for the Garton family. It was to become the Administration block when the hospital opened but was destroyed by fire in 1936. H S Goodhart-Rendel designed the rest of the hospital around the original cottage. There were meant to be further additions to the site: a second ward block further to the right and another nurses' home to complete the rear courtyard. Due to the outbreak of WW2, the work was never carried out. The building was used as a military hospital and the grounds were used as both a military and prisoner of war camp during WW2. The whole of the hospital buildings are Grade II listed
